The fire in the exclusion zone of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was extinguished.
This was stated by the acting head of the State Ecological Inspectorate of Ukraine Yegor Firsov on Facebook.
According to him, the measurements of the background radiation show that it is generally normal.
«In short, the fire was put out, the rain helped a lot. The background radiation level is constantly measured, but the data that we have is generally normal”, — wrote Firsov.
Later, this information was confirmed by the head of the State Emergency Service Nikolai Chechetkin at a conference call with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, transmits press service of the Office of the President.
When asked by the head of state when exactly the burning in the exclusion zone would stop, Chechetkin replied that the fire was gone.
According to him, the State Emergency Service needs a few more days to extinguish the decay that remains after the fire.
He also said that the rescuers prevented the fire from spreading over the military ammunition depots, the Shelter and Vector facilities, the Chernobyl power plant and the radioactive waste storage facility.
