Preparing for frost: how to get free firewood, warm yourself at home without heating, and why you can’t put a potbelly stove in an apartment

Ukraine is actively preparing for the passage of cold weather, however, there is a high probability of repeating blackouts due to shelling. We tell you how to keep warm in the absence of heat and why installing bourgeois stoves in apartments is dangerous.

Who can get free firewood and how?

Mykolaiv and Kherson regions, as well as the territorial communities of Chernihiv, Dnepropetrovsk, Sumy, Kharkov and Donetsk regions have already signed agreements with forestries on the purchase of fuelwood for front-line territories. About it сообщили at the Ministry of Reintegration.

Free wood is already being received by residents of the front-line regions of Mykolaiv, Chernihiv, Kherson, Donetsk, Sumy and Zaporozhye regions.

The delivery and distribution of firewood and the relevant territorial communities of the Dnepropetrovsk region have also begun, where 787 cubic meters of fuel wood have already been delivered. About 100 households have already received free firewood.

More than 610 cubic meters of wood were delivered to the residents of the de-occupied settlements of Kherson. To receive free firewood, residents need apply to local authorities or military administrations. The application must include passport data, contact information and place of residence. In case of loss of documents, in the "Diya" application, you can present any identity document.

The Kherson OVA assured that if you are not able to pick up the firewood yourself, the local authorities will deliver the wood to your yard.

How to keep warm if there is no heating?

In connection with the blackouts, the Ministry of Health announced a number of rules in order not to freeze when there is no heating in the house:

• must be respected layering rule: put on several warm clothes at once, for example: thermal underwear, trousers, knitwear, socks, and wrap yourself with a blanket or blanket over everything. It is recommended to use natural fabrics and 3 layers of clothing, as the first absorbs moisture, the second retains heat, and the third protects against drafts;
• isolate the room: it is very important that the heat cannot escape the room, and for this you need to check all the drafts, for example, using a candle flame or a lighter. And where it pulls strongly, it is worth insulating;
• give up alcohol: alcohol, contrary to popular belief, does not warm, but only gives an imaginary sensation of warmth. At the same time, its use dilates blood vessels, due to which blood rushes to the surface of the body, while the internal organs lose that heat, and in general, heat loss increases;
• consume hot drinks and food, which will help to keep warm: they can be prepared in advance and poured into thermoses or obtained at the Points of Indestructibility, at a gas station, etc .;
• if there is a place to heat water, for heating you can use a heating pad;
• you can’t sit still and every 15-20 minutes you should do physical exerciseseven the simplest ones.

At the same time, it is categorically not recommended to use a gas stove for heating, as this can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. In addition, gasoline and diesel generators cannot be placed indoors - they can only be used outdoors.

Why is it impossible to put a potbelly stove in an apartment?

Due to the heat cut, Ukrainians are seriously thinking about installing stoves in apartments, but this is not only prohibited, but can also be dangerous. Thus, the ventilation of apartment buildings is not designed for such a large amount of carbon monoxide that such a stove produces, and even if you put the pipe out the window, the threat of smoke poisoning remains very high.

In addition, in many houses, the thermal insulation of the house is not done correctly, and the fire of the floor (parquet, laminate, etc.) is a matter of time.

And, according to the law, installing a potbelly stove in an apartment is a violation of fire safety and a criminal offense (Article 270 “Violation of the fire or technogenic safety requirements established by law”), which is punishable by a fine of 50-120 non-taxable minimum citizens (850-2040 UAH), or correctional labor for up to 2 years, or restriction/imprisonment up to 3 years.

If people die or property damage is caused on an especially large scale (for 300 or more non-taxable minimums - an amount of UAH 5100 or more), the violator can be imprisoned for a period of 3 to 8 years.
